You never thought you’d see Dean hurt so bad by someone who wasn’t family — that is, blood, John or Sam, guys who drew the short straw and were Dean’s without question — but that was before the world ended and didn’t.
(Should’ve known all those things you used to say — pigs would fly, snowballs in hell, and the world would end before Dean Winchester chases dick — would come back to bite you.)
You thought at the time that maybe that’s the way Heaven did things: send agents with pushy little attitudes and no regard for personal space. You didn’t know Castiel would be different, that somehow he’d worm his way so deep inside Dean’s skin and Dean’s heart that Dean looks the way he does now: surrounded by a holy fire he drew with such attention and such hostility (Bobby wanted to offer him reprieve from the confrontation, but that was ridiculous; of course, Dean would want to be there, to either gloat about being right about the idjit angel or, if nothing else, because it’s Castiel and headbutting and heartache and if there’s anything Dean drawn towards like a moth, it’s that), surrounded by light, but like something had gone out within him.
(You never thought you’d see Dean hurt so bad — as badly — again by someone who wasn’t family, but then Castiel walks into a lake and doesn’t come up, and yes, you could.)
